LOLA FERNÁNDEZ'S BIOGRAPHY

The author is a composer, profesor of music transcription and music theory at the Music Conservatory of Murcia, Spain. She holds degrees in composition, piano, solfege, and music theory, as well as classical and Spanish dance. Ms. Fernández has taught courses in flamenco music ––its theory, improvisation, and musicology––for many years. Over the course of time, she has developed a teaching method for flamenco music that is currently used in music schools. She is also a profesor at the Emilio Molina Institute of Music Education and a regular conference speaker for the "Flamenco Classroom" series at the University of Alcalá de Henares, Madrid. The author has published instructional books on music improvisation and articles about flamenco such as: "Flamenco in the Music Classroom: The transition from oral transmission to a systematic study". Ms. Fernández was awarded the Frederic Mompou prize for composition in 1994 for her work "Ossa Menor" at the Joventuts Musicals of Barcelona, (published by JMB in 1996). Several of her compositions have been presented in world premiers and have been recorded for movie soundtracks, C.D.s, theater, dance, audiovisual presentations, and short films.
