Pablo Márquez - Guitar Master Class

PABLO MÁRQUEZ

Pablo Márquez is considered one of the most complete musicians of today, whose renowned intellectual rigor, combined with great spontaneity, takes the guitar to unusual levels of expression. The breadth of his repertoire, which ranges from the first publications for vihuela and lute to the most recent and sophisticated contemporary works –which are often dedicated to him– arouses unanimous admiration.

His name is synonymous with an unrivalled sound, captured in the numerous recordings he made for ECM and other labels. In fact, each of his recordings has become a reference for the repertoire he tackles, as confirmed by awards such as the Grand Prix du Disque Charles Cros as well as the countless reviews in the specialized press.

His discography also includes first recordings of concertante works such as Luciano Berio's Chemins V (with Dennis Russel Davies and the Orchestra della Svizzera italiana), Luca Francesconi's A fuoco (with Susanna Mälkki and the Ensemble Intercontemporain), Zad Moultaka's Hanbleceya (with Lorraine Vaillancourt and the Nouvel Ensemble Moderne de Montreal) and Javier Torres Maldonado's Fénix (with Maurizio Gandinetti, Jürg Henneberger and the Ensemble Phoenix de Basel). A second live recording of Berio's Chemins V (with Jean-Michaël Lavoie and the WDR Orchestra of Cologne) was awarded the prestigious Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik.

Pablo Márquez studied guitar in Argentina with Jorge Martínez Zárate and Eduardo Fernández. At the age of twenty, he won unanimous first prize at the Villa-Lobos competition in Rio de Janeiro and Radio France in Paris, the most important guitar competition of the time. He then studied early music in Europe with Javier Hinojosa, conducting with Rodolfo Fischer and Peter Eötvös, and took master classes with the legendary pianist György Sebök, who had a profound influence on him.

His career spanned more than forty countries, having played in the most prestigious venues (Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris…), both as a soloist and in collaboration with musicians of the stature of Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Dino Saluzzi, María Cristina Kiehr, Danilo Rossi, Mario Caroli, the Rosamunde Quartett and the Quatuor Voce. He is a guest soloist with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Radio France, the Symphony Orchestra of Radio Bavaria, the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie, the Philharmonie Baden-Baden, the National Symphony Orchestra of Colombia and the Orchestra of Valencia, and has collaborated with conductors such as Mikhail Jurowsky, Manuel Galduf, Josep Pons, Ernest Martínez Izquierdo and Pavel Baleff.

He has collaborated with the greatest creators of our time, including Luciano Berio, Mauricio Kagel and György Kurtág. Pierre Boulez invited him to perform Berio's Sequenza XI during the celebrations of the 70th birthday of the Italian composer. More than thirty works have been dedicated to him by composers such as Zad Moultaka, Martín Matalón, Fuminori Tanada, Oscar Strasnoy, Roland Moser, Ramón Lazkano and Arthur Kampela.

As a conductor, he founded the KlangMundo Kammerorchester in Basel, Switzerland, an ensemble dedicated to exploring the soundscapes of different cultures around the world, combining music with philanthropic actions in the field of human rights, ecology and social action. With this orchestra he has already recorded Eduardo Falú's Suite Argentina for ECM with guitarist Fabián Cardozo as soloist. In May 2025 he will make his first tour in China as a soloist and conductor.

Pablo Márquez is a professor of guitar at the Musik-Akademie in Basel and gives master classes at festivals and universities around the world.
